Weekend Round-Up: Vets scrape win in season debut
For the first time this season FOUR OHAFC sides were in action, with the Veterans making their bow in the Derrick Moore Vets Cup.
As usual, the over 35s produced a dramatic Cup tie full of incident on the Harrow School astroturf on Sunday morning. Despite fielding just a bare eleven and, at times, being overwhelmed in the first half by the Old Westminsters, the hosts took a lead into the break courtesy of a fine volley on the turn from striker Adam Graham - who was making his Vets debut.
Right-back Ru Hoffen doubled Harrow's advantage with a huge slice of luck, his overhit cross from the right flying over the keeper and in off the far post. But a comical own goal that saw three Harrovians collide on the goal line to bundle the ball in gave the visitors life only for their hopes to be dashed in the final minute when they were denied what looked to be a fairly clear-cut penalty - the skipper tumbling under a challenge from keeper Alex Fraysse after he had been played clean through.
The win should see the OHAFC qualify for the Plate quarter-finals but their future participation won't be confirmed until early December and the conclusion of the Cup group stages.
On Saturday, the three OHAFC sides all claimed different results, the 3s being the only side to win. They backed up last weekend's 5-1 demolition of Johnians 2s with another five-goal salvo, this time beating the Shirburnians 5-3. The game deserved a greater crowd, with eight goals, chances aplenty and the hosts only running out confirmed winners deep into the second half. Adam Graham scored twice with the other goals coming from Freddie Everett, Rupert Stonehill and Alvin Adefarasin.
On the main Phil pitch, the OHAFC 2s were forced to settle for a disappointing 1-1 draw at home to the struggling Old Epsomians. Ed Stewart headed the hosts in front midway through the first half but the visitors hung around and levelled matters midway through the second half courtesy of some hesitant Harrow defending.
Down in Acton the OHAFC 1st XI undid much of their recent good form when they produced a rather limp display in a 5-1 defeat against Division One leaders the Old Wykehamists.
The hosts raced into a 3-0 lead and although George Taylor pulled a goal back five minutes before the interval, the hosts never looked like relinquishing their grip on the game and they eased away with two further goals midway through the second half.
Team sheets and match reports from all four games are now available in the results section
