Weekend Round-Up: Sobering defeats for 1s & 2s
Both the OHAFC 1s and 2s were on the wrong end of 4-0 scorelines on Saturday, the 1s defeat dragging them right back into a relegation battle at foot of Division One.
Having beaten the Old Rugbeians 3-2 on the Hill back in October, hopes were high that a repeat performance would see the 1st XI's unbeaten run stretch to four games and ease them clear of potential danger in the wrong half of Division One.
But despite a decent attacking display on the astroturf in Whitton that saw the visitors hit the woodwork no fewer than four times, defensively there were issues, especially from set-pieces, the Rugbeians taking advantage to score from a corner and a free-kick. In between, a swift counter attack saw the Blues caught short at the back and a superb finish from the Rugby winger ensured the hosts went into the break with a commanding three-goal lead.
Although the visitors battled hard in the second half, the Rugbeians defended stoutly and a late fourth goal rubbed further salt in the wounds. Defeat leaves the Blues eighth in Division One and with five fixtures remaining to ensure they fall no further in the table.
Although the 2s also suffered a 4-0 defeat away to the Old Alleynians 3s at Dulwich College, the OHAFC 2s put in a decent enough display, dominating the opening twenty minutes before conceding twice in quick succession in unfortunate circumstances.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with the visitors creating chances but unable to take them, the Alleynians finishing strongly to score twice and ensure they remain firmly in promotion contention.
The OHAFC 2s remain fifth in Division Three with three games remaining.
