Weekend Round-Up: 3s let vital win slip away
Both the OHAFC 1st and 3rd XIs were involved in high-scoring affairs on Saturday but neither came away with the desired result.
The OHAFC 3rd XI travelled to Essex to face Old Brentwoods 3s in a crucial relegation six-pointer. The visitors fell behind to a poor goal within five minutes but responded well, captain Freddie Everett levelling on the half-hour. Another lack of concentration saw the hosts restore their lead almost immediately but back came the Blues, Luke Berry firing in five minutes before the break to again level the scores.
The OHAFC came on strong in the second half and deservedly took the lead for the first time in the game when Geoff Taunton-Collins rose to head in a throw from Doug Pratt. It seemed as though this would prove sufficient to earn the win, but five minutes from time another poor goal was conceded, Brentwoods snatching a valuable point that keeps both sides in relegation trouble.
Meanwhile, over on the Hill, a disastrous opening half-hour cost the OHAFC 1st XI dearly as they fell 3-0 behind to the struggling Old Salopians. A couple of defensive errors and a well-worked move left the hosts with a mountain to climb, and although the side dominated the second half, goals from Owain James and Harry Bick weren’t enough to avoid defeat.
The 1s drop to fifth in Division One with a trip to Old Merchant Taylors next up.
