Weekend Round-Up: 2s & 3s in action on stormy Hill
Both the 2nd and 3rd XIs were forced to endure miserable conditions on the Hill this weekend, the 2s coming up empty handed against the Old Sennockians on the astro, the 3s securing a valuable point on the soggy Phil against the Old Amplefordians.
Despite a strong first half showing on the astro, the 2s collapsed after the break, falling to a hugely disappointing 3-0 defeat at home to the Old Sennockians. Missing several key attacking players, the Blues enjoyed plenty of possession but could not break down a stubborn Sennockian rearguard. A superb strike from the edge of the box from a poor clearance earned the visitors the lead on the hour mark, before two late goals completed the win. The 2s stay fourth in Division Three ahead of next weekend’s trip to face Charterhouse 2s.
Meanwhile over on a sodden Phil, the 3s battled through the wind and rain to earn a highly creditable 1-1 draw with the Old Amplefordians. The visitors earned a fortuitous lead inside five minutes when a free-kick from distance sailed over the head of keeper Tom Mitchell. But the hosts responded just after the half-hour when Rupert Stonehill bundled in from close range.
The second half was played in almost farcical conditions as the wind and rain lashed down, the pitch by the end a complete mudbath.
