Weekend Round-Up: 1s & 3s start season with defeats

The OHAFC 1st XI played well in spells but were ultimately undone by some clinical finishing from a physically powerful, well-organised KCS Wimbledon side on the opening weekend of the Arthurian League Premier Division, the visitors running out 5-0 winners to send the Blues bottom of the table on their return to action.

A first-half display promised much, with several half-chances created by the Blues, but the opposition showed how it should be done, scoring with almost every opportunity created. A third goal just before the break following a defensive error killed the game as a contest.

The second half followed a similar vein, with the home side playing well in patches but unable to take advantage of their time in possession. They were punished twice more, the final indignity a goalmouth scramble that saw the ball, and skipper McGuinness, end up in the back of the Harrow net.

Meanwhile, the OHAFC 3rd XI were hugely unfortunate to find themselves on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline at home to the Old Shirburnians in their opening Division Four fixture.

Despite creating numerous chances against their opponents, a fiercely disputed penalty shortly before the break was enough to separate the sides and ensure Ed Nicholson’s men started their campaign with a defeat. James Cullimore was adjudged to have fouled his man inside the box by referee Rich Barnard but the spot-kick had to be taken twice due to encroachment.

The closing stages saw the blue shirts pour forwards in a bid to secure a deserved equaliser, but the Shirburnians, who last season proved one of the strongest sides in the division with a 100% record from their five games played, managed to hang on and thwart Harrovian advances.

The team sheets and match reports from both defeats are now available in the results section.
