Vine caught on the hops

A chance meeting this month at the Builder's Arms, Chelsea with former OHAFC 3rd XI Captain, Steve Vine, was engulfed in tearful nostalgia and uncontrollable excitement. Steve has been living and working in Hong Kong for the past 25 years but admits to having left his heart in London and, in particular, on the counter in the saloon bar of The Admiral Codrington. It was there in 1978, whilst consuming several pints of ESB and inhaling numerous Tom Thumb cigars, that Steve gave birth to the OHAFC 3rd XI which he was to lead successfully for its two inaugural seasons.

As a player, Steve can be best described as a solid left back although he was equally solid on the right flank. This solidity denied him an aerial presence and his pace was well short of "blistering". His captaincy skills, however, were outstanding and the 3's seasons of 1978/79 and 1979/80 progressed steadily rather than spectacularly under his shrewd leadership. Steve's considerable efforts and commitment created the platform from which the 3's could enter the Arthurian League for the 1981/82 season.

Steve enjoyed the chance meeting which provided an opportunity to reminisce and speculate on the likelihood of his still being 3's Captain today had he not severed his ties with the Admiral Cod. He is still pretty solid.
