Vets beat stubborn Carthusians to progress in Cup

13 Dec 2018

A three-goal blitz with twenty minutes remaining saw the OHAFC Veterans finally pull clear of the stubborn resistance offered by the Old Carthusians at the Bank of England on Saturday. Having fallen behind midway through the first half, goals from Quentin Baker and Harry Hoffen eanred the hosts a 2-1 lead at the break.

But the side never got going in the second half until, as players tired on the heavy surface, space began to open up and the OHAFC took full advantage. Harry Hoffen earned a penalty which Lederman converted (at the second attempt), Hoffen then headed home Lederman's cross to make it 4-1 and Matt Davies rounded off the scoring with an excellent fifth moments later.

Charterhouse pulled a couple of goals back, deservedly, in the closing minutes as the hosts took their foot off the gas, their place in the quarter-finals now assured.

Intriguingly, the next opponents are the Cup holders the Old Malvernians. The sides met in last season's semi-finals, Malvernians winning 6-4 in highly controversial circumstances following a lengthy delay to kick-off.
