Vets lose to Charterhouse in Cup warm-up
The OHAFC Vets produced a spirited display against their Charterhouse counterparts on Sunday morning but a poor spell immediately after half-time saw the game swing irreversibly in their opponents' favour.
With the pitch at the Bank of England ground in Roehampton suffering badly from last week's downpours, it looked as though good football would be at a premium - a large, square patch of boggy ground dominating the middle of the playing surface.
But to both sides' credit there was some decent play in an even first half that ended goalless. Charterhouse had a more youthful, energetic side but when Harrow broke they did so at pace and looked dangerous.
Unfortunately the exertions of the first forty-five minutes looked as though they had taken their toll on the hosts as they conceded twice in the opening minutes of the second half.
Harrow recovered their composure and continued to battle but a third Charterhouse goal, a simple header from a corner, ended the game as a contest.
Harrow scored perhaps the goal of the game which provided some consolation however, a long ball forward was well controlled by Andy Nicholson and he fed the galloping Nick Warner down the right who beat his full-back for pace before drilling the ball past the 'keeper at his near post.
The 'official' vets side are struggling for next week's cup tie away to Brentwood, with several regulars absent or injured. A nasty-looking swollen ankle sustained by Jon Ingram in Sunday's match hasn't helped matters and it remains to be seen if he can make the trip next Sunday as the team's goalkeeper.
