Penultimate friendly sees Vets lose 5-4
The OHAFC Vets played out a thoroughly enjoyable hour-long game on Sunday morning in their penultimate friendly of the season against Highfield Old Boys.
The two sides cobbled together 20 players for a game of 10-a-side and the hosts made an excellent start, racing into a 3-0 lead in the first half thanks to two goals from Lederman and a third from 'Nico', a late addition to the squad whose trickery and flicks began to raise the heckles of the opposition.
The start of the second half saw some changes which did not help the Harrow side: an injured Highfield player had to go in goal and the hosts were forced to hand back an opposition player when one of the visitors went down injured leading to a numerical disadvantage.
Highfield took full advantage of the situation to rattle in five goals of varying quality and take a 5-3 lead but Harrow responded well and Barrie Wilson's late strike following a comically bad throw out from the 'keeper reduced the arrears to one with five minutes remaining.
Unfortunately the equaliser never materialised despite some excellent late pressure that saw the 'keeper atone for his gift that led to the fourth goal with a superb late save to deny a goalbound effort.
The Vets conclude their friendly programme for the season with a game against Witan Old Boys on Sunday morning. The Cup side are back in action after Easter with a Plate quarter-final against Repton to be played at Merchant Taylors School.
