Vets end 2012 with victory over Arnold House
The OHAFC Vets ended their programme of matches for 2012 with a narrow 2-1 win over Arnold House School in a scrappy game played on a heavy Bank of England pitch on Sunday morning.
With normal Vets contributors Ben and Seb Stones lining up for the opposition, skipper John Wyn-Evans did well to muster 12 OH players for the fixture, helped by the inclusion of Johan Harder and Ed Arghebant who have normally been turning out for the 1st XI on Saturdays.
Despite the mild temperature and sunny morning, the recent rain and frosts had left the bottom pitch in Roehampton in a soggy state and it wasn't long before the central area resembled a bog.
As a result, much of the game was a scrappy affair. The visitors enjoyed the majority of possession in midfield, but with Harder and Steve, an Ealing CC guest paired at centre-half, few chances were created.
The hosts punctuated the general malaise with a fine opening goal after half an hour, the ball being swept out to the left wing from where Ben Durling whipped in a delightful cross for Arghebant to head home.
The second half saw the quality of play deteriorate further as the pitch got worse. Again the visitors enjoyed more of the ball but some stout Harrow defending saw the goals against column remain blank until a sloppy bit of handling from another of the Ealing CC guests in goal gifted Arnold House the simplest of equalisers.
The final twenty minutes saw referee Giles Paul the main protagonist as he failed to see a clear trip in the Harrow box, but then did blow for an equally blatant foul by the visitor's 'keeper, who dragged down Jon Ingram as he closed in on goal. Lederman stepped up to score with a distinctly average spot kick, in keeping with the majority of the game.
Still, after recent results, it was a nice way for the Vets to end the year.
