Vets Cup semi-final preview
The OHAFC Vets travel to Forest School on Sunday morning looking to reach their third Final in the past three seasons.
Two seasons ago John Wyn-Evans proudly lifted the Derrick Moore Trophy aloft for the first time in the Club's history after a memorable 3-0 win over Sunday's opponents Forest. Former 1st XI skipper Quentin Baker grabbed a second-half hat-trick to confirm the Blues' superiority and seal the victory.
Last season, the side's defence of their trophy was ended abruptly when they suffered a 6-1 mauling at Lancing in the first round of the tournament. Lancing went on to win the trophy at the Bank of England ground in late April.
But the OHAFC were also present that day, their early exit allowing them entry into the Plate competition and they fought their way through to face arch rivals Eton in the final.
Again the OHAFC were the better team but this time they could not convert their chances and the game went to penalties. Eton ran out winners after a dramatic shoot-out which saw both teams miss at inopportune moments.
This season has seen the black-and-white stripes once more march through the main draw with two very different but equally dramatic wins.
On a dreadful pitch against a poor Westminster side in the first round the OHAFC made heavy weather of things, finally running out 4-2 winners in extra-time after squandering a 2-0 lead in normal time. Rupert Hoffen scored twice, Lederman and Baker grabbing the others.
The quarter-final away to Charterhouse was played on a decent surface but in driving wind and rain throughout, making conditions a nightmare for both teams.
Harrow opened the scoring just before the break when Lederman used the wind to his advantage and curled a corner directly in off the far post.
But the hosts looked to have turned the tie around permanently when they scored three times in the second half as the conditions played havoc.
Harrow fought back magnificently in the final twenty minutes, Danos and Baddeley levelling the scores at 3-3 before Lederman grabbed a last-minute winner when he chipped the 'keeper from the edge of the box.
Sunday sees John Wyn-Evans call up a squad of 14 for the tie with Forest. Sadly the knee injury Quentin Baker suffered in the first round back in November has ruled him out of not only Sunday's match, but also the remainder of the season.
However, leading 1st XI scorer this season Harry Hoffen has recovered from his various ailments to make his first ever Vets Cup appearance and Paul Molloy returns from the ankle injury that ruled him out of the Charterhouse game. With recent 1st XI retirees such as Nick Warner, Rupert Hoffen, Charlie Tweddle, Jamie Waugh and Piers Bourke all available, alongside grizzled veterans Wyn-Evans, Tindall and Baddeley, the OHAFC will travel with plenty of optimism.
The winners of Sunday's game will face the winners of the Eton v Cholms tie in the Final at the Bank of England Ground on April 27th.
Squad: Tindall, Baddeley, Warner, Waugh, Ingram, Hoffen R, Wyn-Evans (c), Molloy, Lederman, Bourke, Danos, Tweddle, Thorn, Hoffen H
