Vets Cup Final preview
The OHAFC Veterans XI will attempt to earn the Club's one and only piece of silverware this season on Sunday afternoon when they take on the Old Etonian Vets in the Derrick Moore Vets Cup Final in a repeat of last season's Plate Final.
On that occasion, the OH strikeforce spurned several golden opportunities to win in normal and extra-time and paid the penalty, literally, as Eton ran out winners following a dramatic penalty shootout that swung one way and then the other.
This year John Wyn-Evans' men have not had an easy ride to the final. A first round tie away to Old Westminsters should have been straightforward enough but the visitors threw away a two-goal lead midway through the second half and had to endure a nervy extra-time period before finally prevailing thanks to a Quentin Baker strike.
Although it was not known at the time, the injury 'QB' sustained scoring the goal would rule him out for the remainder of the season, leaving a huge gap in the Vets midfield.
In the quarter-finals, a trip to Charterhouse in the pouring rain seemed a tough ask and when the visitors found themselves 2-0 down before half-time and 3-1 down with a little over twenty minutes remaining the final seemed a long way off.
But a tremendous fight-back ensued with goals from Lederman, Baddeley and Danos levelling the tie at 3-3 before winger Lederman settled matters with a cheeky chip over the 'keeper a minute from time.
The reward for the heroics was a dubious one with a trip to Forest in the semi-finals, a Forest side who had earlier eliminated the Cup holders Lancing.
In a bitty game played in poor conditions the Harrow Vets took the lead early on but were forced to hang on for long periods before the home side finally levelled ten minutes from time. At that stage any result was possible, but Piers Bourke provided the vital final act, earning a penalty which Lederman duly converted for his second goal of the game.
Preparations for Sunday's game suffered a sad disruption when news came through of the passing of Dom Danos' father Stephen. Everyone in the Vets squad passes on their condolences to Dom and the family and hopefully he will be back in action soon.
Kick-off for Sunday's final at the Bank of England Ground in Roehampton is 2pm.
