Vets come from behind to defeat Bank of England
The OHAFC Veterans returned to action for the first time since their dramatic last-minute win in the quarter-finals of the Vets Cup and once again left it late to triumph in an exciting first game against the Bank of England at Roehampton.
Despite the fixture being played at the Vets' regular Sunday morning venue, the privilege of playing on the vast main pitch appeared to throw some of the Harrow players and the Bank of England were the better side for the opening twenty minutes.
Centre-halves Harris and Baddeley coped manfully and restricted opportunities to a minimum, thankfully for Tindall in goal, who had complained pre-match about the distances he was having to run to go and collect errant shots in previous games.
As the half wore on, the 'visitors' began to use the wide spaces better and chances were soon being created. But thanks to some outstanding goalkeeping from possibly the oldest player on the pitch, the goals column remained empty.
Bourke was thwarted from close range having been sent clean through before Hollins' mishit shot fell perfectly for Wyn-Evans eight yards out. He too sliced his effort, this time teeing up Lederman at the back post but to everyone's astonishment the BOE stopper somehow flung himself across goal and deflected the ball past the post.
The second half again saw the OH's on top but they fell behind on the hour when the powerful, pony-tailed striker turned Baddeley outside the box before driving the ball past a stranded Tindall.
Harrow continued to press, Hollins waging a one-man war up front, desperate to score despite admitting afterwards that he had known long before the final whistle that it was a forlorn hope.
Nevertheless, the visitors did equalise courtesy of a Lederman free-kick after another driving run from Hollins, who was upended just short of the box. Despite having been unbeatable to that point, the B of E 'keeper then lined up what can only be termed a 'suspect' wall and Lederman had the simple task of curling the ball round one side with the 'keeper standing watching.
Chaos then reigned as Harrow laid siege to the goal: Lederman crossed for Hollins but he could only head over from four yards out, Baddeley then connecting with another header which was kept out via a combination of post and defenders on the line.
It was clearly going to take something special to break the deadlock - that or a completely unnecessary own goal. And the latter duly arrived when Lederman's through ball to Bourke was neatly turned past his own 'keeper by a panicking Bank of England defender.
The visitors' heads dropped and as the game drew to a close further chances were created. Skipper Wyn-Evans was rewarded for his hard work in the middle of the pitch when he thumped home a third with a first-time finish after great work down the left by Andy Burley.
The match ended 3-1 and was an enjoyable affair played in beautiful spring sunshine in SW18. Hopefully the fixture will become a regular on the Vets calendar in the seasons ahead.
