Turner Hat-Trick seals remarkable 2s win
The 2s reignited their title hopes with a stunning win against top of the league OKWs.
They took to the fields with only 4 of the regular 2s players in the line up, again relying heavily on Azhar Khan's squad to field a team.
It was a solid line up nonetheless, despite including no wingers, no full backs, 2 keepers and 1 striker.
Mchardy became the 5th keeper used in the 2s this season, having recovered from a shoulder injury that kept him out for a number of weeks.
Across the back, four centre backs lined up with Orr-Ewing in his future 1s position of right back, Maydon and Gordon at centre half, and Humphrey Atkinson making his club debut at an unfamiliar left back.
Jorel Bajwa and Azhar Khan were asked to provide some width at right and left wing respectively, with a strong midfield trio of Kerry, Jag Baj and Harry Turner, back in action after suffering chronic dicky back. Dave Stead returned up front, with Elwell starting on the bench.
Having beaten OKWs before Xmas, there was some hope of another upset, but the prospect of 90 mins on a hot spring day on the expansive John Lyon pitches looked a daunting challenge.
Stead secretly injured his ankle in the warm up, and soldiered on due to being the only striker available and desperately chasing the club golden boot. But it was Harry Turner who was stepped up to provide the thrust of attacking prowess in the opening passages of the game, charging forward with a gung-ho attitude and worrying the rather statuesque OKWs defensive line. Jaguar Bajwa found some possession just inside the opposition half and slipped a well weighed through ball down the middle to Turner. The midfielder, who had been instructed to play a holding role by the skipper, bombed on and caught the centre backs napping, latching onto the pass and slotting home a well taken finish.
And 5 mins later, amid calls for a more compact and steadier approach, Bajwa again found a rampaging Turner, this time wider on the right. Turner took the ball on the move and caressed it bottom left beyond the shocked OKWs keeper. 2-0.
On 30 mins Elwell replaced Atkinson at left back, and the rest of the half was played out with little incident. Bajwa and Kerry worked well in tandem to stamp out the opposition creativity and were calm in possession. Jorel and Orr-Ewing had a lot of defending to do down the right flank, with the striker pulling into the channel behind the right back and exposing the back 4 with his pace. Gordon did well when he got tight to him and stamped out a number of attacks with interceptions and tackles. Maydon and Gordon got used to the awkward runs of the strikers through the half, and only allowed their ranks to be broken a couple of times, and Mchardy was more than equal to the OKW's best efforts making a string of saves to keep the home side in it.
Khan, unfamiliar with playing outfield, fashioned himself a brilliant chance breaking into the box, but couldn't apply the finish. Harrow escaped a very clear penalty shout when Orr-Ewing missed a header and handled the ball in the box, but fortunately the referee blew for half time rather than for the spot kick.
The second half Harrow had the sun at their backs, the slope and the wind in their favour, and knew that an early goal would seal a remarkable victory. And shortly after the break Harrow made it 3, with Turner working the ball nicely down the right, finding Jorel Bajwa who fed the ball into Khan in the box. The winger kept his nerve and fed Stead, who was moving awkwardly throughout but was in the perfect position to apply a deft finish with a curling effort back across the keeper.
The goal makes it 7 in 8 games, and brings him level with Curry for the golden boot. But with both strikers, and Hoffan (also 7) potentially injured, the award is wide open. Smith has scored 5 for the 3s and will be needed for get 2-3 more games this season so could pinch the award.
Khan then went off with a dead leg and Atkinson filled in at centre mid, with Turner pulling out wide. Then on 65 mins Harrow won a corner, which Turner swung in. Orr-Ewing gave a confident shout and connected well with his head, arrowing the ball into the top corner past the man on the far post. He bagged his third goal of the season, adding a useful part to his game this year having previously mustered just 1 goal in the previous 6 years.
And Harrow made it 5-0 a few minutes later as the OKWs back line looked susceptible to the counter. With so much space on a big pitch, whenever Harrow had possession they were able to get forward with purpose. Gordon made a good interception on the edge of the Harrow box, and wandered forward with his head up. He found Turner on the half way line in space far out left with a good pass, who then drove with the ball towards goal. Without being challenged he got to the edge of the box, and didn't need a second invitation to collect his hat trick, thumping the ball to the keeper's right.
Khan then returned at Gordon's expense, and Harrow soaked up a rally from OKWs. Jorel turned on the flair with a neat bit of skill to fashion a chance down the right and then tried an audacious long shot that dipped just over the bar. With tired legs the defence dropped deep, despite the best efforts of Kerry to gee up his team mates and putting in a big shift himself. At one point he collapsed under pressure and semi exhausted, but still used his face to make the pass. The pressure invited by dropping too deep allowed Kings into the game, and Harrow let the striker get free down the left between Orr-Ewing and Atkinson. He took his goal well despite Mchardy's valiant attempt to protect his clean sheet.
Khan made a lot of noise out on the left wing pointing out that there was a lot of space available, despite not standing in it himself. His performance was solid though and will earn him the right to keep his spot in the midfield for the remainder of the season. With Elwell behind him and Maydon mopping up, the left flank was well organised and solid. The final 5 mins saw a loss of concentration and allowed Kings to score another, but it was too late to worry the home side.
It was a great performance all round and on a good day for OHAFC as the 1s registered a 2-0 win away to Brentwood. Atkinson's debut was assured and showed signs of being a useful player for the club when his touch and fitness return to full capacity. Turner's 3 goals and assist constitute a strong return to 2s action.
In an absurdly tight div 3, harrow are now 2 points off the top spot on 21 points, yet still sit in 6th, equal with Eton, OKWs, Forest and old Berks. All to play for with 2 games remaining.
