Tour fixture #1: Athletico Yunquera 4 OHAFC 0
After a clinical night out in Aqua Mist in downtown Marbella, the squad clambered into their minibus convoy and made the hour long journey to the home of Athletico Yunquera. The scenic route was delightful but could not be fully appreciated by the likes of Ilogu who found the view, coupled with the relentless winding road, somewhat difficult to stomach after his chicken fingers and 'big coke' ordered in Jack’s bar prior to departure. Drivers Stead and Lederman had negotiated the roads well and, on arrival, the tour party were presented with a stunning astroturf pitch in a glorious mountain setting - enough to cure even the heaviest of hangovers.
A brief warm up, photo and pennant exchange and OHAFC were ready to rumble. Khan started with Walsh in goal, Gordon and Woolley at fullback, Chopra and Orr-Ewing the centre backs. Lederman and Gilbert lined up right and left wing respectively with Bajwa in the CDM role and Khan behind the strikers Stead and Curry. A full bench populated all six seats of a smart dugout with circa 100 home fans in the elevated stand beyond. Two minutes into the game and an under hit back pass was seized upon by Yunquera’s athletic striker who rounded Walsh and finished calmly. Four minutes gone and OHAFC were 2-0 down in remarkably similar fashion. The tourists’ headaches were throbbing in the afternoon sunshine. However, orchestrated by Bajwa in midfield, some reasonable passing moves started to push the tourists up field leading to some free-kick opportunities which glided narrowly wide. The hosts banged in two further goals before the break – their third a superb run and shot from amateur football’s answer to David Villa and their fourth a classy finish from the edge of the box into the top left corner giving Walsh no chance.
After a 15-minute half time break OHAFC returned to the pitch wondering a) just how many would they concede in the second half and b) how all 17 tourists remained standing and relatively spritely all things considered.
The second period was more subdued. In fact the loudest cheers were when OHAFC made their substitutions - the home crowd enthusiastically clapping each switch with rapturous applause for captain Khan. Smith came closest for the Blues with a close range effort which was smothered by the Athletico 'keeper. Some late rallying from the hosts produced some fine saves from Walsh to maintain a creditable second half clean sheet. It was only at the final whistle that Lederman helpfully pointed out the hosts had let their four best players go home at half-time.
It was generally agreed that Athletico Yunquera had been excellent hosts which was compounded with a free can of beer post game. Bajwa was later voted Man of the Match by Khan at dinner - his prize being to captain the 2nd game vs Candor C.F.
