Revenge mission on the cards for 1st XI on Saturday
After two recent League defeats, Saturday's Second Round Arthur Dunn Cup match against last year's winners Tonbridge would be a vital one in any case for the OHAFC 1st XI.
But given the manner in which Saturday's opponents dismissed Harrow from the competition at last year's quarter-final stage, when the team travelled to a frozen Tonbridge and played superbly to lead 3-0 and 4-1 with under half an hour to go, only to concede a last-minute equaliser in normal time and eventually lose the tie 5-4 after extra-time having played for an hour with ten men, the added ingredient of revenge will undoubtedly be present when the two teams take to the field.
The OHAFC, despite finishing in the top two of the Premier Division five times in the last decade have only once travelled all the way to the final of the Dunn Cup - in 2007, the year in which they won the Cup thanks to Paul Molloy's superb long-range effort. It is a poor effort for such a consistently strong side and one that is made more infuriating by the fact that on several occasions they have been knocked out by sides from lower divisions, usually at home.
Whilst Tonbridge are a top division team, they currently sit rock bottom of the table with just a solitary win and seven defeats from their eight games. Their goal difference is minus 23 thanks to conceding 35 times in those eight games - nine more than anyone else in the division. And eight of those goals came in the earlier League game the two sides played out on the Hill back in October, when almost anything Harrow hit ended up in the back of the net.
Given this, it would be easy to suggest a comfortable home win on Saturday and progress into the quarter-finals for the second year running.
But this will be no easy task. Since the two sides met Harrow's form has been patchy to say the least, the last two fixtures seeing seven goals conceded and of the four scored, one was a penalty and one from a defensive howler.
Tonbridge's single win came in the last game they played, a comprehensive 4-1 defeat of Kings Wimbledon. And they are known to bring in several players who are at Uni for Dunn Cup matches. The added motive of revenge for the 8-0 thrashing they received back in October is sure to feature prominently in their own team talk.
It all promises a very tight, nerve-wracking affair with the outcome a complete unknown. Exactly what a cup match should be like.
