On this weekend...
Our look back at fixtures played on the first weekend of the new year over the past six seasons has thrown up only one season's worth of games - in the 2012/13 campaign both the Harrow 1st and 2nd XI's were in action:
Two Seasons Ago: January 5th 2013
OHAFC 1st XI 3 Old Brentwoods 0:
The OHAFC 1st XI returned from their Christmas break and produced a solid display in beating close rivals Brentwood 3-0 on the Hill.
As had occurred in a few previous games that season, the side played well in the first half and led 2-0 at the break thanks to a free-kick from Johan Harder and a penalty from David Lederman. Fred Coleridge-Cole won a free-kick on the edge of the visitors’ box when he bravely challenged for the ball with a low header, the kick in the face leaving him with a bloodied nose. Harder stepped up to fire the ball low through a shifting wall of defenders to give Harrow the lead.
Minutes later and the referee incurred the wrath of the Brentwood team when blowing for a penalty following a shove in the back on striker Nick Defty. The decision was slightly fortuitous but Lederman showed no compassion and calmly rolled the ball into the side of the net vacated by the ‘keeper.
The hosts began the second half well but several substitutions disrupted their rhythm and they were indebted to goalkeeper Luke Raffety who pulled off a fine penalty save with twenty minutes remaining to maintain the two-goal cushion. Fortunately, a third penalty was awarded to Harrow with less than ten minutes remaining following a late challenge on Piers Bourke and again Lederman safely converted to ensure the three points and a winning start to the new year.
OHAFC 2nd XI 1 Old KCS Wimbledon 2:
A sloppy first 20 minutes saw the Harrow 2’s go 1-0 down after an early cross from the left wasn't dealt with by the Harrow defence.
The hosts responded well with a good spell of possession. A brilliant move down the right involving the two schoolboys, Breeden and Verhagen, resulted in Soyinka heading in at the far post. But the equilibrium was short-lived as an awkward back-pass just before half time sparked a scramble and a curling shot-cross floated into the top corner of Pritchard's net.
The second half saw the introduction of Dalzell who looked lively at times but, along with Soyinka and Stead, struggled to penetrate a well organised KCS back four. Bartlett worked tirelessly in centre midfield and Verhagen reached the by-line on a couple of occasions but Harrow failed to test the opposition 'keeper and the visitors saw out the game without too much fuss.
