OHAFC prepare for unique semi-final weekend

23 Mar 2018

For the first time in OHAFC history, the club will be attempting to win THREE cup semi-finals on the same weekend. Never before has the club seen three of its' four teams reach the last four of their respective Cup competitions in the same season - but courtesy of the Veterans' reprieve following defeat away at the Old Chigwellians last Sunday, that is exactly what has been achieved this campaign.

On Saturday, the 2nd XI face the Old Kimboltonians on the Sunley Field for a place in the Junior League Cup final. The 2s famously won the competition in 2006 and 2011 and returned to the final in 2012, losing to Charterhouse 3s. They have not progressed beyond the quarter-finals in the intervening years.

Kimboltonians are an unknown quantity, not playing in the Arthurian League, but their earlier results in the competition suggest they will be formidable opponents, having already eliminated the 2nd XIs of both Chigwell and Eton.

Just two OHAFC players remain from the 2011 and 2012 finals, with Harry Woolley winning the competition in 2011 and Hugo Trower on the losing side the following season.

Should the 2s win, they will face either Forest 2s or the Old Alleynians in the Final. The OHAFC have already played both teams in Division Two earlier this season, losing twice to Alleynians but comfortably beating a weakened Forest team on the Hill.

Whilst the 2s have tasted plenty of Junior League Cup success, the OHAFC 3s are breaking new ground in their David Woolcott Trophy semi-final against the Old Johnians.

The competition is open to sides from Divisions Four and Five (North & South) and with the Johnians top of Division Four, and having remained unbeaten in all competitions since early November, the 3s face undoubtedly the stiffest challenge of what, until now, has been a superb season.

Following an unlikely opening day thrashing at the hands of a strangely-competent Malvernian 2s side, Nick Kapoor's men embarked on their own long unbeaten run, winning nine and drawing one of their next ten League games. The run carried the side to the top of Division Five South and was only ended last weekend thanks to a 4-2 home defeat to Westminster 2s on the Hill.

The 3s remain in prime position to seal promotion into Division Four however, requiring just a single point from their final two League games to claim the Division Five South title. They would then have to prevail in a play-off against the side finishing second in the northern section to gain promotion.

In the Cup, the 3s have progressed relatively serenely with 3-1 wins away to Bancroftians and at home to Brentwood 3s. In between those two ties however, they had to rely on a penalty shootout victory over Forest 3s following a 2-2 draw after extra time. The winners of Saturday's semi-final, to be played on the astroturf at Hampton, will face either Old Rugbeians or Old Columbans in the final.

The day after the 2s and 3s games, the OHAFC Veterans will attempt to continue their excellent recent run of success in the Derrick Moore Veterans Cup when they travel to Uxbridge to face the Old Malvernians.

A comfortable opening round victory over Repton saw the side drawn away to Chigwell in the quarter-finals. After a lengthy wait to play the tie, the two sides finally locked horns last weekend in a titanic contest that saw Harry Hoffen put the visitors ahead with just nine minutes of extra-time remaining, before two late Chigwell goals saw them claim a dramatic 3-2 win.

But the drama was only just beginning. Following discussions between the teams on Monday and Tuesday, Chigwell duly forfeited the tie after admitting fielding a ringer. Given the closeness of the result and the fact they had two substitutes, it was felt the additional player had an unfair impact on the result.

The upshot is that John Wyn-Evans is once more within touching distance of yet another Vets final: under his captaincy, the side have won the Cup twice, finished runners-up twice and lost the Plate final once in the last six seasons - a remarkable record.

The winners of Sunday's tie will face either the holders, Forest, or the side the OHAFC beat in the 2016 final, the Old Brentwoods, in April's final. Once again, as in the last round, the team will be missing two key players, with Quentin Baker and Ed Poulter both unavailable. Dave Mutter is set to make his first appearance of the season and, in a further boost to the team, Jon Ingram is set to resume goalkeeping duties following the medical all-clear on his broken thumb.

Good luck to all three teams in their semi-finals - reports from all three games will appear on the site over the weekend.
