Lederman stunner sends Vets into quarter-finals
A superb strike from 35 yards out with seven minutes remaining from skipper David Lederman earned the OHAFC Veterans a 3-2 win over their Salopian counterparts on Sunday morning and a place in the quarter-finals of the Derrick Moore Cup.
In an entertaining game played on a decent pitch at the Bank of England Ground in Roehampton, the visitors took the lead through a re-taken free-kick, the ball being driven past Andy Butler in the Harrow goal. The hosts responded soon afterwards via a tried and tested routine, Lederman finding Molloy at the far post from a corner and a firm header bounced in off the foot of the near post.
Again Salopians took the lead, this time a well-worked goal that saw their right winger cut inside and latch onto a long ball over the top before producing a simple finish from the edge of the box. But again the hosts responded to level the scores, Piers Bourke producing a driving run from the left past several Salopians before slipping in Matt Davies to finish.
The second half belonged initially to the Salopians, but having weathered twenty minutes of pressure, the Blues found their rhythm once more and should have scored several times in a period of dominance. Piers Bourke hit the bar, Molloy struck the post and several other simple chances went begging.
But with penalties looming, Lederman finally found a way past the Salopian keeper, collecting the ball in midfield before producing an inch-perfect chip from thirty-five yards out, the ball crashing in off the underside of the crossbar.
The OHAFC will have a home tie in the quarter-finals against either the Old Brentwoods or KCS Wimbledon Old Boys, with the tie scheduled for Sunday, January 12th, again at the Bank of England.
