Kyri Pittalis named Young Player of the Year

22 Feb 2016

2nd XI goalkeeper Kyri Pittalis was named the Robert Worthy Young Player of the Year on Saturday night.

The 23 year-old only began playing for the Club last season having graduated from Durham University.

He made his debut in a 2-1 defeat to the Old Salopians' second string on the Harrow School astroturf in January 2015 and ended up playing seven times under Jack Orr-Ewing. Results varied wildly in those seven games, with Kyri keeping a clean sheet against Aldenham the week after his debut and helping the team to a thumping 6-1 win over Merchants Taylor in the Junior League Cup before being on the wrong end of an 8-1 hammering by Millfield seven days later.

This season Kyri has established himself as the long-term replacement to retired 2's goalkeeper Alasdair Pritchard, making nine appearances to date - the seventh most in the squad - although, unsurprisingly given the side's poor defensive record, he has yet to keep a clean sheet: Charlie McHardy was in goal last week for the 2-0 win over the Salopians, the only clean sheet the side has kept all season.

Despite this, Kyri still enjoyed a memorable afternoon a few weeks ago when his heroics in goal helped the Blues win a tense penalty shoot-out against Westminster 2's in the Junior League Cup. A 2-2 draw after ninety minutes saw the sides lock horns from the spot and the it was the Harrow man, hobbling from an injury sustained earlier in the game, who came up trumps, saving the second and third Westminster efforts to see his side into the next round.

Kyri joins the distinguished list of former winners of the Young Player of the Year trophy, kindly donated by Club legend Robert Worthy, and becomes the second goalkeeper to win the award after Charlie Walsh in 2013.

Many congratulations Kyri!
