Football returns...for now!
118 days since an OHAFC side last took to the field, football on the Hill finally returns this Saturday, with both the 2s and 3s in action in revamped Cup competitions. Given the extensive COVID-inspired interruptions throughout this season, the Arthurian League have, unsurprisingly, opted to cancel the League season and instead attempt to finish the three Cup competitions.
The Arthur Dunn Cup will continue as normal, with five quarter-finalists still to be found and all remaining games in the competition taking place in a secure bubble at Merchant Taylors School. But with the Junior League Cup and David Woolcott Trophy having barely started, the League has decided to play both tournaments in a new format in a bid to give all competing clubs a few more games before the summer break.
The idea is for both Cups to be played in a Champions League format, with four groups of five teams in each, the top two in each group progressing to the quarter-finals. It remains to be seen whether or not a lack of available pitches curtails this novel and rather exciting development, but in theory it provides both the OHAFC 2s and 3s with a minimum of four more games this season.
The 2s have been drawn in a tough-looking Group B of the Junior League Cup with arch enemies the Old Etonians 2s, last season's JLC runners-up the Old Columbans, an Old Radleians side recently relegated from Division One and KCS Wimbledon 2s, the only Division Three side in the group. First up for the Blues tomorrow are the Old Columbans, in a game being played on the Park Lake pitch. Revenge will be on the cards for Geoff Taunton-Collins' men as they seek to avenge last season's heart-breaking last-minute 1-0 defeat to the Columbans in the semi-finals of the Cup.
Meanwhile, the OHAFC 3rd XI have been drawn in Group C of the David Woolcott Trophy and have, on paper at least, a more favourable route to the quarter-finals. Two of their four opponents play in Division Five North, the Old Haberdashers and Merchant Taylors 2s. Prior to last weekend, the Old Alleynians 2s, who were sitting second in Division Four prior to the cancellation of the League, would have been strong favourites to top the group, but they suffered a surprise 3-1 defeat away to Old Habs, so now must join the OHAFC, the two Div 5N teams and the Old Wellingtonians, another Division Four side, in the battle to qualify for the last eight.
The Blues open their tournament with a home fixture on the Harrow School astroturf against the Haberdashers, with both games kicking off at midday.
