Barrett & Bick to set new season appearance record
When Kyle Barrett and Harry Bick line up for the OHAFC 1st XI in their final League game of 2018/19 away to the Old Cholmeleians on Saturday afternoon, they will both set a new OHAFC record for the most appearances made for the club in a single season: both players will become the first in club history to play 25 competitive games in a single season when they step out to face Cholms for the promotion decider in north London.
Centre-half Kyle has been a rock at the heart of the 3s' defence this season, regularly featuring alonside younger brothers Connor and Callum as the side went in search of glory on three fronts. Indeed, Kyle and left-back Callum are the only two players in the club who have been ever-present for any of the three Saturday sides this season: both players have started all of the 3rd XI's 16 Division Four games and the six Cup games played. Kyle also featured twice for the 1st XI early on in the campaign, playing in the defeat at home to Reptonians in October and the win at Berkhamstedians at the end of November.
Meanwhile, versatile winger Harry is one of six players to have represented all three of the main Saturday sides this season (none of the six played in either of the 4th XI's Cup fixtures this season) - Harry is joined by older brother Charlie, Luke Berry (in his debut OHAFC season), Dan Firoozan, Emre Sert & Cyprian Owen-Edmunds in playing games for the 1s, 2s & 3s this season.
His only previous 1s appearance came as an emergency left-back in the excellent 3-1 win over Division One champions the Old Alleynians on the Harrow astroturf in early February - he played well and may be asked to perform a similar role in Saturday's game at Cholms.
But Harry is more at home as an attacking winger or forward and has flourished this season in front of goal, scoring twice in three 2nd XI appearances (both goals coming in quick succession away to Lancing 2s) and, impressively, 19 in 20 3rd XI games. His tally of 21 sees him go into the 1s final game as the club's joint-top scorer this season, alongside last season's Golden Boot winner James Breeden.
Kyle and Harry's record total of 25 appearances sees an encouraging trend of players committing themselves on a more regular basis to the club and switching happily between the teams: this season no less than 8 players will have made 20+ appearances for the club, another record tally. Last season that figure was 4 players and in the three seasons preceding that no more than 3 players played twenty or more games for the club in each year.
The pair's record run of games also sees them break a four-year hegemony on the single-season appearance record held by the two skippers in charge of the 1s & 2s: Yunus Sert and Geoff Taunton-Collins had both led the club twice in the past four campaigns for most appearances made, Geoff playing 22 games in 2014/15 and 2017/18, Yunus playing 23 times in both 2015/16 and 2016/17.
Congratulations to both Kyle and Harry for their commitment to the cause this season and good luck in tomorrow's vital fixture at Cholms.
