3s win Division Five South to move closer to promotion
The OHAFC 3rd XI earned the point they needed to assure themselves of the Division Five South title on Saturday, beating Old Amplefordians 2-1 in Twickenham to set up a play-off fixture, probably against Brentwood 3s, in order to win promotion to Division Four.
The 3s become the first OHAFC team to win their division since the 1st XI were crowned League champions in the 2009/10 season.
Nick Kapoor's men passed up their first chance to clinch the division when losing 4-2 at home to Westminster 2s in their previous fixture a month ago.
But they made no mistake against a solid, but somewhat limited Ampleforth team. Alex Smith opened the scoring just before the hour mark with a delightful backheel flick from Charlie Bick's free-kick. Substitute Oscar Gairard then saw his long range effort rather fortuitously squirm through the 'keeper's grasp to confirm the win late on. Ampleforth pulled one back with two minutes remaining but the Blues held on to secure the win comfortably enough.
Muted celebrations followed the final whistle with the knowledge that the side still has to win their play-off game to ensure promotion is secured. Before that, the team travel to Uxbridge next week for their final regular season fixture away to Westminster 2s.
Saturday's team lineup, match report and photos from the game are now available in the results section here.
Many congratulations to Nick Kapoor and his squad for their fantastic achievement
