3s denied promotion as Columbans hold on
The OHAFC 3rd XI narrowly failed in their bid to claim a second successive promotion up the Arthurian League on Saturday when they were held to a 1-1 draw by their direct rivals the Old Columbans. Needing a win to overhaul their hosts and claim second spot in Division Four, the Blues were on course at the break courtesy of a rare goal from skipper Nick Kapoor.
But ten minutes into the second half a well-worked move down the Columbans left saw the ball drilled across goal and turned in at the far post. The Blues struggled to create any chances of note against a physical, well-drilled Columbans side and the hosts held on, claiming their second successive promotion and joining the Old Suttonians in Division Three next season.
It was cruel on the OHAFC 3s, who have again enjoyed a fine season together, but ultimately come away empty handed having been knocked out of both cup competitions on penalties by sides now contesting the respective finals, and having fallen just short in the League, when for long periods promotion seemed within their grasp.
Ultimately, too many draws against sides lower down the table have cost the team at the death. Nevertheless, great credit must go to the two skippers, Nick Kapoor and Alex Smith, and to the entire squad for their efforts.
The final teamsheet, match report and photos of the 3s' season are now available in the results section here.
