2s melt in slightly wet 2nd half
The 2s' slow start to the season continued with a difficult game vs Epsom on the Phil.
A good game a fortnight ago against a poor Winchester side saw Harrow go into the game full of confidence. However, it was quickly apparent that this Epsom side, who had lost to Winchester, had a lot more to offer than the Wykhamists. Two mobile strikers and a number 8 that operated effectively through the middle opened up the Harrow team on numerous occasions in the first half. Harrow were unable to get tight to their men, and allowed them far too much space to pick a pass.
The inevitable first goal came as indecision between the centre backs at a throw allowed the Epsom man through on goal, and he slotted past an on-rushing Pritchard.
Dave Stead then dropped into the #10 role, allowing Kerry and Amin to sit deeper and provide a solid platform to build from. Harrow were dominant for the final 25 mins of the first half, creating a number of chances and shutting up shop at the back. The pressure paid off, and Dave Stead, in his first game of the season, scored a trade mark header from a trade mark Cater long throw.
Harrow continued to play it long, and got some joy form poor Epsom defenders who allowed the ball to go over their heads too regularly. The teams went into the break with Harrow on top and at 1-1.
The second half, however, saw a poor performance from the Harrow team, as Epsom grew and kept possession well. The link up play from back to front, with much of the football coming through the number 8, was too much for Harrow. Pritchard, also making his first competitive start for the season, had his best game in a number of years, making multiple saves as Harrow conceded far too many chances. Arjun Chopra, whose positioning and attitude had been first class throughout the game, was unfortunate to give away a penalty at 1-1; making a decent block with his hands by his side, he was adjudged hand-ball. Harrow were let off as the striker hit the post, with the ball rebounding out.
An excellent corner from Epsom broke the deadlock, with Orr-Ewing being forced into a difficult clearance on the six yard box. His header hit an Epsom man, and the ball dropped kindly for their centre back who thumped home. An unlucky goal, but deserved given the pressure.
Epsom trusted their passing and kept the ball on the deck, which paid off over the 90 mins. While Harrow had been able to push back the visitors with some long balls, the running up top slowed in the second half and the tactic was nullified.
A third goal sealed victory for Epsom, with 20 minutes still to play. A bouncing ball in the box was inadequately dealt with by Orr-Ewing, and the striker won it back on the by-line, crossed and found his man on the goal line to hit home.
A missed penalty by Beresford at 3-1 could have given the home side a chance to fight for the draw, and the striker will be disappointed with the missed opportunity.
Some spirited performances from Harrow for short periods. We have to find form for 90 mins if we are to get 3 points vs the old enemy next weekend.
