2007 OHAFC Dinner - 10 Years On
Tonight is the 2017 Biennial Club Dinner, so what better time to leaf back through the archives and see how events unfolded at the 2007 occasion - a landmark Club Dinner in several ways.
For the first time in the Club's history, Chelsea FC's Stamford Bridge ground was the venue for the evening. Guests entered the West Stand and climbed into the Dimitri Kharine lifts before alighting at the third floor, home of the Harris Suite. The touching naming of important locations within the West Stand led many to wonder just where the Michael Duberry urinals were and whether the Nigel Spackman heated trolley was fully functional or not.
A record attendance of over 200 Old Harrovians and their guests were present, boosted, also for the first time ever, by wives and girlfriends. Barely had he walked through the door than Bobby Tindall announced himself happy with the fresh arrangements: "Oh yes, this is excellent," he said, purveying the assembled throng in front of him.
Andy Butler and Ed Thorn had organised proceedings with precision and after an excellent meal the entertainment began. Former Harrow School Master and Premier League referee David Elleray gave an interesting talk on the history of 'soccer' at the School, before Fred Woolley once more climbed the podium to deliver his trusty 'Hump every ten yards' road sign gag with his customary timing.
A further 'treat' was provided for those present with the comedy musings of Ed 'Gazza' Morgan, Nick Defty and Harry Woolley. By the time this segment had concluded, everyone was desperate to get to the bar and, for the youngsters, a trip to Barbarellas nightclub just a short walk from the ground beckoned.
Bobby Tindall came along - purely in an advisory capacity of course - and the night wound down in quiet, reflective discussion of the football season to date and the club's prospects going forwards.
Let's hope tonight's events at the Hurlingham Club can match or even surpass those of ten years ago - have fun everyone!
