The most prolific OHAFC striker in the past thirty years continued rewriting the record books on Saturday as the OHAFC 2nd XI began their latest quest for Junior League Cup success with a comprehensive 7-1 demolition of Brentwood 3s on a wintery Harrow Hill.
For Gbeminiyi Soyinka, the stats speak for themselves when it comes to illustrating his goalscoring prowess over the past eight seasons: 50 goals in 42 League games for the 2nd XI, 27 in 15 Junior League Cup ties - adding up to a remarkable overall 2nd XI record of 77 goals in 57 appearances. To place that in context, Gebminiyi has scored on average every 67 minutes he has played.
On Saturday, as brief snow flurries chilled the players of both sides to the bone, it took Gbeminiyi barely a minute to add to his tally. A brief spell of passing saw the ball arrive at the feet of centre-half Will Orr-Ewing, making only his third appearance of the season, and he delivered a perfect ball over the top of the Brentwood defence for the striker to run onto. Showing his trademark pace and power that has proved such a nightmare for defenders over the years, Bem drove into the box and drilled his shot past the 'keeper. For the second time on the day, a Harrow side had opened the scoring in the first minute, following George O'Malley's debut goal for the 1st XI earlier in the morning.
The pattern was set for a first half that Harrow dominated, the Division Five side unable to cope with the crisp passing and movement of Geoff Taunton-Collins' men. Indeed, the skipper was heavily involved in the early stages as time and again he linked with Hovey and Lederman down the right, producing numerous overlaps and delivering a plentiful supply of crosses into the box.
With the Curry brothers dominating the central midfield area, the hosts, wearing their change strip of red shirts, had carte blanche to attack and came close on numerous occasions with shots and crosses peppering the Brentwood goal. As it was, only one further goal was added prior to the break, Lederman delivering the ball from the right and Soyinka twisting to loop his header over the 'keeper and just under the bar.
Rather perversely, the second half saw the crispness of Harrow's passing deteriorate somewhat, but they managed to score five times past an increasingly bedraggled Brentwood team who stuck manfully to their task, but were considerably hindered by an injury that meant their goalkeeper playing outfield and the hobbling outfielder donning the gloves.
Jamie Barwick was the first to take advantage, cracking a shot in from outside the box that beat the 'keeper to his left. The closing stages saw the scoreline given a more emphatic look, with Soyinka scoring almost identical goals, collecting passes first from Khan, then from Dalzell, rolling his man and finishing inside the near post.
Lederman took advantage of a poor clearance and even poorer positioning from the 'keeper to chip the ball in from outside the box before then providing a cross from the left for Alhadeff to run onto and cushion a simple volley to complete the scoring.
The only disappointment was the late concession of a goal when Woolley slightly underhit a pass back to Kyri Pittalis allowing a Brentwood forward to steal in and slide the ball home.
Nevertheless, the 2s had produced a sound display with some decent football to ensure a swift passage into the last sixteen of the competition.
The side return to League action next week with the visit of Aldenham 2s to the Hill. A win and the side may be able to confirm their promotion to Division Two prior to the biennial club dinner the following Friday.
