Their fourth fixture of the season saw the 3rd XI take on Alleynians' 2nd string on the Phil - Kapoor's men desperately needing to register some points and get their season up and running after 3 defeats on the bounce. In need of a result, there was some aggressive recruitment in the week leading up and the fixture saw the return of some 3rd XI stalwarts. The likes of Ludo Callendar, Alec Fogarty, Pom Beeley and Freddie Fife returning to bring some much needed experience to the core of the team.
The early exchanges were fairly cagey as both sides tried to avoid making any mistakes. The game opened up after 10 minutes and Harrow began to settle and get their passing game going. There were some neat exchanges between Charlie Bick, in the number 10 role, and Kyle Barrett up front but just lacking the final ball. Alleynian were still a threat on the Counter-attack and the pace and energy of Chris Thorn was a much-valued asset with him returning to the side after missing the last game. On 25 minutes, some nice build up play between Kapoor, Fogarty and Callandar down the right hand side led to a corner from which Bick floated in an inviting delivery causing a melee in the box. The ball then dropped to the feet of Kyle Barrett who shimmied past the opposing centre-back before he was clearly tripped. Controversially, no penalty awarded.
The team, still clearly aggrieved by the referee's decision, let their guard down and were undone by a diagonal through ball, splitting the defence and leaving their striker one-on-one with Michael Nugent in goal before he finished with aplomb with a delicate chip into the top left corner. Not even Manuel Neuer stood a chance.
Heads did not drop and Kapoor made some bold changes, introducing Connor Barrett, Will Brightman and the returning Benjy Sewell. They proved to be effective as the team rallied and there were some half chances for Beeley and Kyle Barrett before the break.
A big half time speech from Kapoor and some tinkering to the formation saw the team race out the blocks at the start of the second half and Alleynian were on the backfoot. Jesse Duah's pace was a threat all afternoon and he was causing havoc to the their back four as he was moved upfront. Bick and Brightman were combining well down the left flank and Beeley and Callender were winning all the loose balls in the middle of the park.
Some nice link up play between Beeley, Connor and Kyle Barrett, saw Duah put through on goal and he finished neatly to pull the game back for Harrow. It was all Harrow after that as Kyle Barrett volleyed over from close range. Bick continued to delver wicked balls into the Alleynian box and it seemed it was only a matter of time before a second goal was coming. At the other end, Thorn and Fife were solid throughout and quickly diffusing any waves of attack from Alleynian.
Alleynian won a cheap free-kick on the right hand side and swung in a dangerous ball, volleyed at the back post, which looked certain for the back of the net but for the heroics of Nugent keeping the scores level.
Both sides pushed for the win but were held off by some stubborn defending and in the end 1-1 was a fair result. It gives the 3's their first points of the season and hopefully they can build on the result when they take on Old Johnians next weekend.
